Marriage & Relationship Counseling
Marriage and relationship counseling isn't just for couples in crisis. It's for any two people committed to nurturing and strengthening their partnership. Many couples seek therapy simply to understand each other better, improve communication, or work through a specific challenge before it becomes overwhelming.
Seeking Support Together
Deciding to attend marriage therapy takes courage and a desire for positive change. It means acknowledging that your relationship, like all meaningful relationships, requires intentional care and attention.
At La Plata Family Therapy, we create a safe, non-judgmental environment where you can both be heard and understood. This isn't about taking sides or assigning blame. It's about helping you develop the tools to deal with challenges constructively.
Rebuilding After Life's Unexpected Turns
Life has a way of throwing the unexpected our way: job loss, illness, the death of a loved one, struggles with infertility, or the stress of raising children. These experiences can either bring couples closer together or create distance and misunderstanding.
Couples and marriage counseling offer a safe environment where you can process these difficult experiences together. We help couples learn how to support each other through life's storms while maintaining their emotional well-being.
Rediscovering Intimacy and Connection
Our approach includes helping partners rediscover what drew them together initially while also embracing how they've both grown and changed. We explore ways to sustain emotional intimacy even during busy seasons of life, and we address concerns about physical intimacy with caring and genuine respect for your needs.

Frequently Asked Questions
What if my partner refuses to attend counseling?
It is common for one partner to be more hesitant than the other. You can still attend "relationship counseling" as an individual. We can work on your reactions, boundaries, and communication style, which often creates positive shifts in the relationship dynamic even if you are coming alone.
Do we have to be "married" to come to couples therapy?
Not at all. We work with couples at every stage—dating, engaged, co-habitating, or married. Whether you have been together for 6 months or 30 years, if you want to strengthen your bond or resolve conflict, we are here to help.
Do you accept insurance for marriage counseling?
Yes, we accept most major insurance plans in Colorado and New Mexico. However, please note that many insurance plans require a "medical necessity" diagnosis for coverage. We can discuss how this works during your initial consultation or intake call.
Can you help us recover from infidelity or an affair?
Yes. Recovering from betrayal is painful and complex, but it is possible. We provide a structured, safe environment to process the hurt, understand how it happened, and determine a path forward—whether that means rebuilding trust or navigating a separation with respect.
We believe everyone deserves to overcome their struggles so they can can live a full and joyful life.
