1. Avoidance

The person may avoid talking about the traumatic event or not want to be around people.

Signs include:

  • Turning down invitations to social events
  • Not going to community services
  • Avoiding going to the office for work

2. Hypervigilance

This is when a person feels on-edge and tense all the time.

Trauma can activate the fight-or-flight safety mechanisms in our body, which is a good thing because it’s a protection mechanism. But, for those who experience trauma, they have a difficult time turning off that mechanism. For them, it always seems to be “on.”

If you or someone you know is constantly checking their surroundings, find it difficult to focus on conversations, or find crowded or noisy environments overwhelming, they might have experienced trauma.

3. Outbursts of Anger

These are sudden, intense expressions of anger that often happen without warning.

If you know someone who may have experienced a traumatic event, or if you think you’re experiencing the effects of trauma, please schedule an appointment with a mental health professional near you or one of us at La Plata Family Therapy. We’re here to help.
